Kamal Saleem (a pseudonym) was born into a large Sunni Muslim family in Lebanon. As a boy of seven fleeing a beating from teenage thugs in ethnically divided Beirut, Kamal took refuge in a mosque where he met radicals of the Muslim Brotherhood.
